We started our hike in the small and beautiful mountain valley of Lavertezzo. It is quite easy to get to using the Postbus from Tenero, a city close by Lucarno. The busride itself is quite spectacular, as you can see Lake Maggiore spanning across the horizon in the beginning. Later on a dam dominates the impressions, followed by the the pure green of the water in the river filling the dam. The hike will follow the river up to the small village of Sonogno.

At around 9:45 we arrived there with the southern sun welcoming us, making the water in the river look like a rock-split Smaragd. The first thing that catches your eye is a double-arched bridge, spanning over the river. The riverbed, made out of water smoothed stones and boulders acts like a magnet for all the people below the age of 12, of which there are many. This hike is perfect to be done with children, as its rather flat and a lot of things are prepared on the track itself. A bunch of divers where also preparing for some sort of dive, where however they wanted to dive in the quite shallow was not fully clear.

Passing over the bridge, you start the hike through a forest. Most of the hike actually goes through a forest. As we did that hike in middle of May, the trees where still bold. In a few weeks however, the forest should be more alive.

Walking along the way, we passed several waterfalls and even a few sand beaches. Lining the path are several smaller villages, with the majority of houses build in the stone construction which is typical for the alpine regions.

After around 5 kilometers, we did our brunch-break directly next to the river. Afterwords we continued and another 5 kilometers in, it started to rain. The sun by now has hidden herself behind dense clouds and the fog slowly started to creep over the northern mountain ridges. We sought shelter and did our second brake and continued our journey onward.

However, another 3 kilometers, in the village of Frasco, the rain started to get quite strong, so we decided to end the hike here, two kilometers before our goal of Sonogno.

This hike is extremely easy and more of a longer walk. The river with its marvelously shaped rocks and the overall landscape make it one of the more beautiful of such walks.
